The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) in the Berlin Research Association, an member institute of the Leibniz Association, aims to understand and, where possible, improve the adaptive capacity of wild animals to cope with global change. To this end, it investigates the diversity of lifestyles, mechanisms of evolutionary adaptation and limits of adaptation, including diseases, of wild animals in and out of human care and their interactions with humans and the environment in Germany, Europe and overseas. The Institute fulfils this mission through long-term, application-oriented, interdisciplinary basic research in evolutionary ecology, ecological dynamics, evolutionary genetics, wildlife diseases, reproductive biology and reproductive management.
The IZW is looking for a
full-time engineer for scientific computing / data science
to maintain and expand the resources used for scientific computing within the Leibniz-IZW. Our physical infrastructure for scientific computing currently includes three compute servers, two data servers and an SSH bastion host, all operating under Linux. In terms of software used for scientific computing, IZW staff have developed a series of R packages (e.g. “camtrapR”, “IsoriX”) which are currently maintained by scientific staff. Our goal is to improve and expand both physical and software resources and assist people using them.
Responsibilities include:
- administration and maintenance of a set of computers operating under Linux and used for scientific computing,
- assisting the development and maintenance of existing and future R packages of the Leibniz-IZW and beyond, and supporting their users,
- contributing to in-house training in Linux, R and scientific computing.
Requirements:
- a solid foundation in computer programming
- a solid foundation in data science,
- familiarity with Linux-based operating systems,
- ability to speak and write in fluent English,
- ability to work independently as well as integrate in a group and with scientists from several departments,
- mastery of the computer programming languages R, Python and a lower-level language (e.g., C, C++) will be a definite advantage,
- previous experience in server administration will be an advantage,
- an interest in wildlife conservation, biology or evolution will be a definite advantage.
This is a full-time staff position with a long-term perspective, initially limited to 3 years. It will be filled as soon as possible, with the earliest starting date in January 2024, later dates are possible. Applications are preferrably received by 15th November 2023, with interviews expected to take place at the beginning of December. Remuneration is in accordance with the public collective bargaining law TVöD (Bund), most likely TVöD E13.
